What seems like a long time ago, I was looking after my friend’s daughter and she sang me a song about her socks. I thought it was brilliant, and when I told her mum she said “Oh yes – My Socks. It’s a Nick Cope song. Don’t you know him?” I looked him up on YouTube and he became an instant hit in this house. His songs are funny, great to sing along to, and easy to listen to for parents and children alike. He has just released a new CD collection of family songs – The Pirates Breakfast – which is available now.
It is always a delight to find music that you can sing along with your children, and this CD really delivers. The songs tell wonderful stories of a pirate’s relationship with his dear old mum, a dragon called Keith who really likes to do his own thing and use his wings to dance across the sky, and dreams of what a child can do when they get older (go to Japan in a frying pan!)
Some of the songs really stick in your head. I mean proper, never ever leaving ear worms. You will find yourself standing in the supermarket quietly singing the hilarious “The Baby’s Done a Poo” before you know it. Some, like When I Get Older are really great to dance like a loon to. And others are more touching. Has Anyone Seen Hammy is a beautiful but moving story dealing with the loss of a loved pet – something that many children deal with at some time or other. Jemima the Scaredy Cat is my 4 year old Lucy’s favourite on the CD – the most paranoid cat of all time. But then anything about cats will get her going! My 7 year old Emma loves that song too, because it is “funny and nice to sing along to”. And me? Keith the Dragon (In the Middle of the Forest) has to win it for me!
I asked Lucy and Emma for their feedback about the album and was told “Great great great”. Can’t say much more than that really, can I!
